Alex is 5 years, 3 months
We are using My Father’s World Kindergarten as our base,
adding in some of my own printables.
This week, we are learning the letter Rr for rock.
Our Bible words are: I listen and obey; I build my life on the Rock!
We really liked the combination of fun story and lots of facts in Dave’s Down To Earth Rock Shop! That’s probably our favorite book from this unit.
Go Alex, go! You’re doing GREAT, my big boy!
I wrote the Rs on the top of the Aquadoodle, and Alex did the ones on the bottom.
He also used a popsicle stick to write Rs in the salt box.
We bought this activity rock kit from Amazon, and we found it to be really fun! It contains pumice, dolomite, tumbled quartz, and lodestone. We experimented to see which rock would float, and we talked about why. We found which rock was magnetic, which rocks spark/light up when struck together (SO COOL!), and we are in the process of growing crystals on dolomite.
Here, Alex is setting up the dolomite (to grow crystals) by pouring vinegar over it and adding a penny to the vinegar. We are still watching this and waiting for the vinegar to evaporate so the crystals can grow. (So far, there’s just a little limestone sediment around the edges of the glass where the vinegar has evaporated.)
discovering the pumice floats because it is lightweight and full of small airholes
sorting rocks by color
(It was too chilly to rock hunt outside, so we bought a bag of rocks at Joann Fabrics.)
We made rock candy! It’s not quite finished yet, but we “cheated” and pulled them out to take a peek yesterday. It seems to be working. It is supposed to be ready on Saturday.
There’s SO MUCH MORE that I wanted to do, but we ran out of week! I wanted to read a volcano book & make a volcano model. I also wanted to read Stone Soup and make soup. I guess we’ll try to do those things when Max is ready for MFW K!
