Big Girl Bed

IMG_8215

We have a friends who are expecting a baby soon, and we offered to give them Jensyn’s crib.  It’s a beautiful crib, first used by my niece 13 years ago and now used by all three of our kids.

IMG_8216

I cried when taking these pictures.  This crib has held one of my babies every night for over five years, and it’s hard to let go of the baby days!  It was time to let go, though, since there’s soon to be a new little baby who needs a place to sleep.

IMG_8218

Jensyn has LOVED her crib from the time we brought her home from the hospital.  She never slept well in the bassinet, but when I first set her in the crib, her little body relaxed and she slept much more soundly.  She still absolutely adores her crib, and we knew she didn’t want to give it up.  Her brothers were both in a toddler bed by 18 months, though, and we knew she could give it up.

IMG_8519

We brought her into the room to watch while Daddy took apart the crib.  Her face went pale, and she just focused a wide-mouthed stare on the bare crib.  She watched carefully as Daddy took it apart.

IMG_8520IMG_8521IMG_8522

We were very unsure about that first night in a big girl bed.  The toddler bed has been set up in her room for over a month now, but she has refused to sleep in it when offered the choice.  We were pleasantly surprised when we put her in the toddler bed on Friday night, shut the door, and only heard one brief whimper.

IMG_8525

The next thing we knew, it was morning…our sweet baby girl made it through her whole first night in the toddler bed without trouble!  (Her hair, well…we’re not sure her hair fared so well during the night, ha ha!)  I’m not sure if the pictures show it, but she was VERY proud of having slept in her big girl bed!

IMG_8524

Her second night didn’t go quite so smoothly.  She’d gone without a nap on Saturday, and that always seems to set her up for a rough night.  She was crying at around 1 AM, and I found her sleeping on her tummy – with her bottom in the air – in the middle of the floor.  I rocked her back to sleep, but she woke up an hour later (in her bed this time) all out of sorts.  At least she hasn’t discovered the freedom to get up and play yet…that’s always the “fun” part! Open-mouthed smile

Along with giving away the crib, we also sold the changing table/dresser to our friends.  It was a beautiful piece of furniture, which we purchased to match the crib, so it only made sense to let it stay with the crib.  We went shopping yesterday (which is why Jensyn missed her nap) and have narrowed down our options for a new dresser and a twin-sized headboard.  (I am blessed to have two sisters who work in furniture stores & are able to offer us a family discount!)  For now, Jensyn is sleeping in a rather empty bedroom and several boxes/crates of clothes, blankets, jammies, and toys are on the living room floor.

So…that’s it for us…the crib days are gone for our family.  We are BLESSED beyond measure to have three beautiful, healthy children who have slept in this crib.  Now it’s time for another family to be blessed with a beautiful crib for their new baby!

Jensyn – 18 Months

Our little peanut turned 18 months yesterday.  This is just a “placeholder” so I can come back, edit, and add details later.

In the meantime, you can smile at my silly little girl with her bathing suit on her head.

Jensyn – 9 Months

(written when Jensyn was 9 months, publishing when she’s almost 16 months…)

Oooh, boy.  Life is busy with 3 kids.  I missed 8 months.  I knew it, and I felt guilty, but sometimes it’s just so hard to sit down and blog.  Now Jensyn is halfway through the 9th month, so I better get to this before another month goes by!

January2010 024 January2010 020

And now, after loading the two pictures from 2012, I realized that I don’t have easy access to the 2011 pictures.  Perhaps I’ll do the words now, add the pictures later…

Jensyn now has 6 teeth – 4 on top and 2 on bottom.  She loves biting people’s fingers.  She’s a thumb sucker, and she bites her own thumb.  Ouch!  Thankfully, she doesn’t bite much while nursing.

Speaking of nursing, she generally nurses about 5 times a day now.  Sometimes, she’s so hungry she eats in a hurry.  Other times, she’s slow about it, stopping every once in a while to look right at me and babble some cute baby talk.  Often, she has to pause and check out what her brothers are doing.

Jensyn LOVES to eat!  Yes, she likes baby food.  She loves a bowl of rice cereal or oatmeal before bed.  She loves mashed banana, bits of bread, Gerber Puffs, and mashed potato.  But you know what she really loves?  Chili.  Stuffed Pepper Soup.  SPICES…and the more, the better.  I have never met a baby so in love with flavor and spice!

She really does a very good job with eating “big people food”.  As long as the bites are tiny, she will eat it.  We’re not sure it’s a word, but Jensyn almost always says, “MmmUH!” when she wants more.  Whether it’s a word or a noise, she’s making her point known.  The child wants more food, and you’d better hurry…’cuz she’s not going to wait patiently! ;)

She’s getting better all the time at feeding herself small bites of table food.  It’s nice, as I now have the freedom to feed myself from my own plate before my food is cold.

Since I mentioned her maybe-word, I’ll point out that she also seems to say “Mama”.  We’ve heard her look right at Keith and say “Dada”.  We know for sure that she says, “Yay!” when she’s clapping.  She might be saying, “Hi”, too…since she says “HA!” when waving.

I find it hard to believe that she would start talking at only 8.5 months old, and she would have five words by the time she’s a little over 9 months old.  It doesn’t really seem likely to me.  Yet, even with my doubt, she still seems to use these “words” in the correct context.

Jensyn is sitting up very well, she can roll both ways easily, and she can gently get herself from a sitting position to lying on her tummy.  What she can’t do is crawl.  Most of the time she doesn’t even care.  She doesn’t even get up on all fours yet.  She can sort-of spin in a circle when on her belly, so she can reach nearby toys.  Sometimes she scoots just a bit on her belly.  Sometimes, when sitting up, she bounces and scoots on her bottom.  Crawling, though, still seems to be a ways off.  Since she didn’t sit independently until almost 8 months, I’m not surprised.   And standing while holding onto furniture?  That’s probably a ways off yet.  Who knows, though, maybe she’ll surprise us one of these days and just do it.

As long as she has a full tummy and a dry diaper, Jensyn is content to sit and play with whatever is nearby during the day.  It’s different when we’re away from home or if she’s sleepy…then she wants nothing more than to be held.

She’s still a mama’s girl much of the time, but she is growing a little less leary of others.  Keith & I actually managed a date last weekend with both a movie and (quick) dinner, and Jensyn did just fine with Grandma & Papa the whole time we were out!  Even when we came home, it was a good ten minutes or more before she cried and reached for me.  Good girl!

Jensyn went REALLY backwards in the nighttime sleeping for a few weeks.  It got to the point where she was waking up every 2 – 3 hours to nurse.  I let it go for a few weeks in case it was just a growth spurt, but eventually I decided that we no longer have a newborn…and I missed my sleep!  It was time for some good ‘ol crying-it-out.  Little Miss put up a good fight, but now she’s often sleeping from 8:30 PM – 5ish AM, nursing, and then back to sleep until 8 AM.

(For me, crying it out means letting her go for 30 – 60 minutes, checking on her to make sure she’s not stuck in a crib slat or jammed in the corner, checking that her diaper isn’t dirty, cuddling her for a few minutes, and laying her back down.  No nursing until at least 5 AM.  Repeat until baby is asleep.)

She likes to babble now – lots of Nah, Nah, Ah-Bah-Dah talk going on around here!  She’s not a constant talker, though.  Jensyn really is good at sitting quietly with her toys for long periods of time.

After a while, she gets tired of sitting on her own, cries out to be held, and then she & Mama do chores together, sit together for a few minutes, or watch the big boys play.

She LOVES to watch her brothers play, watch the dog, or watch other kids when she’s in the nusery.  Speaking of nursery, she is getting VERY good about going to nursery at both our church and at my Tuesday morning Bible study.  She sits and happily plays with toys for the full 60 – 90 minutes…even when she’s sleepy from missing a nap!

She gives out grins somewhat stingily…unless it’s Daddy, who gets the BIGGEST GRINS EVER.

She waves.  That’s a new one in the past week or so.  It’s so cute!  At Costco last week, she was smiling and waving to everyone around us.  At home, she’ll usually wave AFTER people are already out of sight.

She likes to stand for short times on mama’s lap or with other people, but isn’t too interested in standing yet.

She likes the Jumperoo for short times, but she’s not a huge jumper like Max was.

She naps from 10/10:30 – 11:30 AM, sometimes until 12:30.  THen she naps again from 2:30/2:45 – 4:30/5 PM.  Even if she’s really sleep and naps until almost 6 PM, she is still ready for bed right on time.  She wants to have her cereal (with Daddy) around 8 PM, nurse (with Mommy, of course), and she happily goes to bed around 8:30 PM.

She is NOT a bedtime snuggler.  I’m rather disappointed about that.  I’d love to cuddle her, sing to her, read her a Bible story before bed.  Instead, she wants to be fed and lay down in her crib.  No snuggles.  No cuddles.  Just BED.  I’m glad she’s a good go-to-bedder; I’m sad that she won’t cuddle.  Usually, I stand next to her bed, hold her upright in my arms, and sing her a song before setting her in her crib.  She smiles while I sing, so I know she enjoys it.

Other than a few minor colds with runny noses and one bout with the stomach flu a few months ago, Jensyn has been a healthy girl!  So far, no ear infections!  By this age, both of her brothers had multiple ear infections.

We moved Jensyn to a (rear facing) big girl carseat a few weeks ago.  She may not be a huge baby, but I was tired of fighting the stuck handle on our infant seat, and she’s just too big to lug around in that carrier everywhere we go.  Since the straps don’t adjust well on our infant seat, we couldn’t easily and safely strap her in with puffy winter clothes.  So, it was time to move to the big girl seat.

We’ve only bought ONE carseat for our three kids.  The infant seat and Alex’s big boy seat were baby shower gifts.  Max’s big boy seat was given to us (almost-new) from a friend who couldn’t use it with her special needs daughter.  Since we are finished having kids, I chose the safest girly seat I could find for under $150.  It might seem silly, but I love seeing her in her cute pink seat!

Jensyn – 14.5 months

Originally written in late June 2012

When we found out we were having a girl, I think both Keith & I pictured a GIRL…you know, frilly and pink and sweet as can be.  Jensyn IS those things, but she’s so much more – she’s feisty, funny, and full of energy.  I think this little girl will be keeping us on our toes!

June2012 181

She loves to climb, loves to chatter, loves to eat, has no problem with getting dirty, and enjoys a good game of chase…although she’s fairly easy to catch since she’s not walking yet.June2012 124

Jensyn has such a sparkle in her eyes.  Her little personality just SHINES if you spend any time around her.

June2012 179
She’s quieter in public -  more restrained, just taking it all in with her beautiful eyes.  When she’s in her own environment, though, watch out!  You’re going to see a spunky little girl who keeps us all laughing.

June2012 182

Did I mention that she loves to eat? ;)

On this night, we had mashed potatoes.  Jensyn finished hers and asked for more.  (“Moh!  Moh!”)  I gave her more.  She finished those and asked for more.  I gave her more until the pan was empty.  She cried with the saddest little eyes, and I broke down and handed her the serving spoon.  She licked that thing CLEAN!

If you’re wondering,  she ate her pork and carrots before getting the extra potatoes! ;)

  June2012 184 June2012 183June2012 185

Jensyn talks up a STORM every day.  She tends to be quiet when we’re out shopping or when strangers talk to her, but when she’s in a comfortable environment, she jabbers non-stop.  It’s adorable!

When she talks, I’m reminded of the children’s book Knuffle Bunny.  Trixie, the little girl in the story, truly believes she’s talking even though she’s really just making up nonsense words.  That’s Jensyn to a tee!

She does have a handful of real words:
Moh! (more)
Mama
Dee! (doggy or daddy)
Da-dee! (just beginning to use this for daddy)
Bow (ball)
bye-bye (beginning to use more often)
hi (uses on occasion)
bee-die (birdie – just beginning to use this)
dee-die (kitty – just beginning to use this)
…and she’ll throw in a random word every once in a while to surprise us!

Signs:
please (although she hits the table/high chair tray instead of her chest)
bye-bye (also for nigh-night)
milk

Jensyn is totally & completely in love with pets.  She loves dogs, kitties, birds, chickens (at the farm while camping), and rabbits (at Kevin & Annie’s house).  Her whole little body just shakes with excitement when animals are around.  She adores them!

She doesn’t watch much TV (unless I’m taking a shower…), but she LOVES praise song DVDs.  We have two older videos on VHS that she loves to watch.  I’m hoping she’ll enjoy the two we have on DVD, as those are coming along for car entertainment on vacation!

She loves to be outside.  Her big brothers often forget to close the door tightly, and she has escaped the house on more than one occasion.  This is SCARY to me, of course, and it takes real effort to make sure she’s safely in the house at all times.

She’s a climber.  She LOVES to climb slides, and she’s getting pretty fast at it.

(And at this point, as Jensyn is almost 16 months and I’m just pulling this post from draft mode…I’m going to post it “as-is” just because it needs to be posted!  Love you, Jensyn, and I hope you understand that Mama DOES care.  Better late than never, right?)

Jensyn Walks…

Jensyn took her first steps in West Virginia while we were on vacation.  There was no one working in the church nursery, so when Jensyn got too wiggly to stay in the service, I took her to the church basement so I could visit with Kathy.  While Kathy and I were talking, Jensyn stood up in the middle of the floor all by herself and took several steps.  I had no camera on hand, sadly.

She’s done it every now and then for the past few weeks, slowly becoming braver.  It’s been hard to catch her on video, but I finally got a quick video while watching the preschoolers play games at VBS last week.

Jensyn – 13 Months

April2012 007

Oh, little girl!  This month, you are losing some of that “babyness”.  I knew it was coming, but suddenly you have a great desire to be a big girl.

You’re always standing.
You’re playing with your big brothers’ toys.
You don’t eat any baby food.
You’re liking sippy cups.
You are “talking” all the time, and some of it might be real words.
You are playing and interacting with us so well!
You stare at strangers with a blank look on your face.  Most people don’t get to see what a HAPPY baby you are at home!
You love to play “chase” with your brothers. Since you crawl, you’re pretty slow…but you still go in circles all around the living room, giggling like crazy!

You love to clap!

April2012 211

You love to watch your brothers playing outside.

 April2012 016

You still love to suck your thumb.  When we lay you in bed, you lay on your tummy, turn your head to the side, and suck on your right thumb.  Every nap.  Every night.  It’s just your thing.  And you never forget to wrap your fingers around your nose while you do it.

April2012 062

You like pretty much everything we feed you.  I have yet to find anything to spicy for your liking.  You got upset when I didn’t give you salsa on your tortilla chips yesterday.

You are very good about signing “all done” when you’re finished.  Over the weekend, at Danielle’s wedding shower, you even SAID “all duh” when you realized that Mama was eating ice cream.  If “all done” meant you could set aside your lasagna and have some ice cream, then you were ALL DONE…even if you’d only taken a few bites!

April2012 076 April2012 088

You don’t say a lot of real words yet, but you will randomly repeat words.  Today at lunch, you were saying “ketchup” over and over again because Max asked Mama for ketchup.

Words I am SURE you say: yay, hi, Mama, more, Dada, all done
Words you may have said: Papa, bye, Alex, Grace, “guys” (for your brothers), “hey”, that (like “what’s that”
Signs you use: all done, bye bye (which you also use for hi and nigh-night)
Signs you recognize: more, milk, all done, bye bye

You had a great Easter!

April2012 105  April2012 119

You stand.  All the time.  You even stood straight up (without grabbing anything to help you) in the bathtub a few nights ago, and you “dove” over the edge of the tub trying to get out.  I’m glad I was right there, paying attention and ready to catch you!

April2012 201

You’re not walking, although you are pulling yourself up on just about everything.  You’re getting pretty good at cruising around tables and couches.  Just last night, you figured out how to walk behind your push walker.  You were giggling with delight!

You are crawling at super-speed, and I often “lose” you.  One minute, I’m emptying the dishwasher while you play by my feet.  The next minute, I’m frantically searching the house only to find you in the master bedroom, digging through a pile of tissue paper from the wrapping paper box we store under our bed.

You climbed the stairs all the way to the bonus room last week Wednesday.  WOW!  You were so proud of yourself that you grinned from ear to ear, giggling.  Now, you’re CONSTANTLY waiting for the boys to leave the door open so you can head upstairs.  You LOVE to be set loose in the playroom!

You look cute in your big brother’s hat.

April2012 177

You like to do silly things for a smile.

 April2012 198  April2012 200

You point, point, point at everything around you.  This is a new thing in the past week.  Oh, it’s so cute!  You point where you want me to take you.  You point at Daddy’s car when he’s pulling in the driveway.  You point at people who you know.  That little finger is always pointing lately.

You are still nursing a few times each day.  Definitely bedtime.  Definitely 3 – 4 AM.  Usually once or twice during the day.  I’d like to work on breaking the 3 AM feeding.  Sometimes I go and grab a sippy cup of milk from the fridge instead of nursing you.  You fight it a bit, but you do eventually give in.  If I was more consistent, I might be making progress.  It worked with Alex when he was small.  With 3 kids, I’m just too tired to work at it.   If I’d just be more consistent, you & Mama would both be sleeping all night.  Eventually we’ll get there…especially since waking at 3 AM is a big part of why I’m tired!

You have the same night routine as your brothers.  Bathtime at 7:30 with all three kids in the tub.  After you’re in your pajamas, I hand you over to Daddy for a little special playtime with him while I finish bathing your brothers and brush their teeth.

April2012 040Mama puts the boys to bed while Daddy feeds you a bowl of rice cereal and brushes your teeth.  Then Mama nurses you, you give Daddy a big grin and kiss him goodnight (you love that!), and Mama takes you to your room.  I’d like to snuggle and sing you a song like I did with your brothers at that age, but you’ll have nothing to do with it.  You DIVE out of my arms to get in your crib.  You lay on your belly, turn your head to the right, and pop your thumb in your mouth.  I rub your back and sing you a song.  That’s it.  You go to sleep.  No fussing or arguing.  It’s usually 8:15 - 8:30 when I close your bedroom door and walk away.

You wake in the night for a quick nursing “snack”, and then you go back to sleep until 8 – 8:30 AM.  You wake happily, playing in your crib for a bit before calling out some baby gibberish to get my attention.  You will resort to crying if I don’t hear you or if I don’t get there fast enough.

Usually, we’re ready for breakfast when you wake up.  I plop you in your high chair with some Cheerios and a cup of milk…

…and then we go about our day…naptime at 10/10:30 – 11:30/12, naptime at 2:30 – 4:30/5 PM…

You’re a happy baby, Jensyn.  We love watching you blossom and grow into a sweet, energetic little girl.

You are a BLESSING in our lives, and we are so thankful for you!

Look Whoo’s Turning One

Well, it’s happening…the baby is turning ONE on Wednesday!  We celebrated with family on Sunday.jensyns birthday invitation 2 copy

I don’t go “all out” with decorations, but we do like to make the kitchen look festive!  With all of our kids, we’ve started leaving the decorations up all month because it makes the kitchen so cheery!  (Besides, if I am putting in the time to make a homemade birthday banner, it’s going to see more than one day’s use!  Ha ha!)

We made all the party decorations using graphics from the owl tot pack. The basic idea for the invitation came from something I found on Etsy, but I wanted to use my own graphics and colors.  The pink box on the invite above is covering our phone number.  (Graphics by Pixel Paper Prints Etsy Shop)

I’m hoping to remove the owl circles, replace them with something else, and reuse the banner at Jensyn’s future parties.

March2012 128March2012 130

Keith’s mom and niece made the cake, and they had the idea to make it look like the invitation.  It is one of THE CUTEST cakes I’ve ever seen.  They did a great job, didn’t they?!

March2012 187

The dots on the edges of the cake match the tablecloth.

March2012 184

Keith suggested that we do tacos for lunch, as Jensyn loves spicy food.  It was a big hit!  Keith made beef taco meat, and I made shredded taco chicken in the crockpot.  We set out hard shells, soft shells, and the quesadilla maker.  We had all the typical taco fixing, too. (…except for the shredded lettuce, which we realized AFTER THE PARTY, had never made it out of the fridge.  Now we have 2 bags of shredded lettuce that expire tomorrow…salad, anyone?!)

My mom made taco salad, my sister Deb made guacamole, cousin Ali made a bean and cheese dip, my sister Donna & SIL Janice brought fruits and dip.  As always, mom made pigs in a blanket with Little Smokies.  (Those are turning into a mandatory food at our children’s birthday parties!)

Jensyn, all ready to eat her first course…

March2012 134

It was a beautiful day for April 1st, so we had people eating outside too!

 March2012 132March2012 138

Present time…the boys were “helping”.  I’m glad they got to help, but I couldn’t keep track of which gifts came from which family members.  Things were being thrown in my face, opened without my knowledge, etc.

March2012 152 March2012 160

Let’s see if I can remember…
LOTS of dresses and play dresses
a cloth diaper cover and inserts
a few shirts and shorts
”Little Miss Matched” socks and a sock puppy
stacking cups
a ladybug book
a pack of Huggies
a bathing suit
a raincoat & hat
an owl plate
money for her savings account
pink storage boxes for her closet

March2012 167March2012 179

Jensyn enjoyed her smash cake, but she didn’t really get herself dirty until she started crying.  That caused her to smear it all over her face when she rubbed at her eyes.  There were taken over about a ten minute time span…

I think she’s DONE.

March2012 203March2012 205

After this, we decided maybe Jensyn needed a nap while we hung out with the party guests.  I brought her to her room and laid her down as always.  She curled up, thumb in her mouth, bottom in the air, and closed her eyes.  She looked SO SWEET.

Since the camera was in my pocket, I pulled it out to snap a quick photo.  Look what Miss Sleepyhead did when she saw the camera…

March2012 222

She did lay down and take a nice nap, though!

Here are some random shots taken throughout the day.  Oh, how we love a house filled with family!

Since we won’t be with my family next weekend for Easter, my mom brought a little “egg hunt” along with the little ones.  She had eggs filled with candy and snacks for the preschoolers/toddlers.  Jensyn’s eggs were filled with goldfish crackers.

She also gave each of my kiddos a  new divided lunch plate…owls for Jensyn, rocket ships for the boys.
