Alex is 5 years, 10 months.
He will turn 6 in December 2013.
Alex is learning right now that history is HIS story – the story of God’s world!
We read about how the ravens fed Elijah when he was in the wilderness. Then, Alex was a ‘raven’ (clothespin ‘beak’) collecting ‘bread’ (cottonballs) for me (Elijah) with a clothespin.
God helped Elisha do miracles like keeping a widow’s jar of oil from running dry. We re-created the lesson using a bunch of ‘jars’ in our kitchen, but our pitcher of oil (water, really) ran dry, of course! 
Our verse this week was Philippians 2:14, and we learned how the people in our Bible lessons this week followed God without complaining or arguing.
Alex sometimes wants to pass an item back and forth, taking turns saying words of the Bible verse, but for the most part, he now prefers to just read the verse to himself until he has memorized it. I’m impressed by his reading level!!!
We are finishing All About Reading Level 1 – and moving on to level 2 – this year.
(Please keep in mind that I have the older version of LHFHG, and if you purchase a new guide, your math will follow a different sequence than what we are doing. I created my own spreadsheet to match the math activities in the older version of LHFHG to the lessons in Singapore Essentials. It’s not perfect, but it will work for us!)
We’ve been working on non-standard measurement this week. We measured a variety of kitchen items using unifix cubes.
Alex did the page below correctly, but then he felt the need to put a funny shape around the envelope to show that it was the ‘medium-ist’. Silly boy!
We used nearby items to sequence from shortest to tallest.
Again, this week was pretty easy for Alex. I don’t want to push him in math. I like the way this is slowly, gently providing a base for more challenging math in the future!
After reading the story of Jonah, Alex’s science assignment was to collect things from around the house that he thought would FLOAT in the water. He gathered several objects, and we tested them in the bathroom sink. Everything he chose floated, except for the Matchbox airplane. (Can you tell we’ve discussed sink & float a lot of times previously?!)

This day, the focus was on completing the missing elements in the pictures in each row.
Handwriting:
He’s almost finished with uppercase letters (doing 2 – 3/unit), so we’ll be moving on to lowercase soon! He could use the practice with a few of the lowercase letters, so we’re taking our time before starting the handwriting workbook that I have waiting for him.
We read (in Peter Rabbit) about how Johnny Chuck gets ready for winter. Then Alex stamped snowflake on paper and wrote about how HE gets ready for winter!

After reading how God took Elijah to Heaven in a fiery chariot, we drew pictures of heaven using sugar-chalk. We used sidewalk chalk, as that’s all we had on hand, and we left the chalk to soak for several hours before doing the project. Even so, our pictures did not glisten
The experience, however, was a LOT of fun, and all three of my kiddos spent a long time at the kitchen table coloring with the wet chalk. It was a new art medium for them, and they liked it!
